July Construction Unemployment Lowest Since 2008

The July unemployment rate for construction workers fell to the lowest level in five years, declining to 9.1 percent from 12.3 percent in July 2012. Although both residential and nonresidential contractors have added workers in the past year, employment growth in July occurred only on the residential side.

Climbing Wilder:
Elmhurst’s New Park Playspace


Wilder Park, the first park acquired by Illinois’ Elmhurst Park District in 1921, received a facelift in 2012 that features multiple net climbers on a new, custom playground. The new play area features many recycled elements, including picnic tables, game tables and benches constructed from recycled plastic timbers, set above poured-in-place surfacing made of recycled rubber tires.

Repeat Performance

The equestrian enthusiasts at this residence in Gates Mills, Ohio, commissioned Impullitti Landscaping, Inc., to complete a number of hardscape installations including a horse and rider resting area. For this installation, indigenous stone was used for the columns, and reclaimed granite cobbles, believed to have originated in Belgium, were used for the pavement.

Botanic Garden of Smith College Gains Accredited Arboretum Status

The Lyman Plant House (Conservatory) at the Botanic Garden of Smith College is named for the Lyman family of Northampton, owners of one of the homesteads that make up Smith's original campus. The primary donor for the Conservatory was Edward H. R. Lyman. His summer estate is now the campus preschool and the garden's 15-acre Fort Hill Nursery.

EPA Admits Demand for Ethanol Gasoline Falling Short

The EPA announced August 6 that the Renewable Fuel Standard, which requires yearly increases in the levels of ethanol added to gasoline, will likely undergo revisions next year. The agency "does not currently foresee a scenario in which the market could consume enough ethanol sold in blends greater than E10, and/or produce sufficient volumes of non-ethanol biofuels, to meet the volumes of renewable fuel and advanced biofuel required by statute."
