NJ Gets Help to Rebuild Infrastructure

The New Jersey Department of Transportation will get $128 million in federal grants to help repair state roads and bridges damaged by Sandy. The grant is part of the $60.2 billion Sandy Supplemental Appropriations bill signed into law in January 2013. The full funding package will assist homeowners, businesses and communities recover from the storm, including rebuilding coastal transportation and clean-water infrastructure.

According to PRWeb.com, the federal judge overseeing an Imprelis class action lawsuits (Wright & Schulte LLC.) in Pennsylvania federal court has granted tentative approval to an Imprelis class action lawsuit settlement. Also, according to PRWeb.com, the terms of the Imprelis class action lawsuit settlement require DuPont to compensate tens of thousands of property owners for their dead and damaged trees.

South Carolina Mower Exchange

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control says an annual exchange program gives contractors the chance to get a discount on an electric lawnmower when they turn in their gas-powered devices. DHEC's Myra Reece says a riding, gas-powered mower emits as much hourly air pollution as 34 cars. Lawnmowers collected at the event are recycled. Since 2007, Reece says more than 1,300 gas-powered mowers have been recycled, cutting emissions equal to removing more than 230 cars from state highways.

Illinois Spending $50 Million on Transportation Enhancements

One of dozens of localities receiving state money for transportation improvements, Park Ridge, Ill., received $841,000 for streetscape improvements in the city's uptown district (pictured). The city plans to focus the grant money on several blocks of sidewalk replacement, new trees and tree grates, benches, trash cans, brick pavers and lighting.

January Home Builds Falter After December Surge

Construction starts on new homes in January fell 8.5 percent from the previous month, driven downward by a dip in multifamily home builds, though the 23 percent gain in that category in December deflected doubts in the market’s durability. Permits rose 1.8 percent to mid-2008 levels.

Berens Park West Playground Renovation

A new play area in Elmhurst, Illinois’ Berens Park was created to meet updated regulations. The primary play structure (Landscape Structures) features a spiral slide, roller slide and a double slide, and a fire pole, a boulder with outrigging, and a rock wall for climbing. Thirty-five hundred square feet of poured-in-place safety surfacing were installed for the project, most of it beneath the main play structure.

Among the National Asphalt Pavement Association’s 2012 Quality in Construction Awards was the 2012 Sheldon G. Hayes Award to the Shelly Company’s southern division (Dover, Ohio), part of the materials division of Oldcastle Inc., for the “smoothest asphalt pavement in the country,” something all drivers can appreciate. The smooth strip runs for 11 miles on I-70 in Licking and Franklin counties in Ohio. The NAPA awards singled out 96 asphalt pavement projects for their use of green construction practices, i.e., incorporating reclaimed or recycled materials and using warm-mix asphalt.
