Helen Diller Playground
San Francisco, California
Helen Diller Playground, a $3.5 million installation in Mission Dolores Park overlooking downtown San Francisco, replaced a small play area built in the 1920s and haphazardly maintained for most of a century. Today, the playground spans one acre and features multiple levels, slides, a 60-foot-long pedestrian bridge and customized musical play equipment.

Deicke Park Discovery Zone

The fabulous Deicke Park Discovery Zone is in Huntley, Ill., a village about 50 miles northwest of Chicago. This panorama does not reveal the full playground, but we see the village (front right), the music area (center), the school play area (top), Bankshot play (top left), and the train/fire truck area (left). There are hundreds of feet of block seat walls that also act as planters and supports for the murals and blackboard. Concrete walks circle the playground’s inner core to facilitate wheel chair travel, with four-way stop signs at intersections. Picnic tables (Wabash Valley) with shades are among the adult amenities.

| Hardscapes for the Playspace |
 |
Surfacing is a paramount concern for landscape architects, as increased regulations for fall safety and the danger of litigation can threaten ill-considered projects. Hardscape materials can play a key role, inspiring active play and supporting safety surfacing beneath playground equipment. Here, a low retaining wall (Granite Blend Anchor Highland StoneŽ, Pavestone) corrals soft safety material under a small play structure and swing set.
