Santa Cruz, CA Restricts Irrigation

The Santa Cruz, California City Council enacted a 5-percent water cutback to keep 100 million gallons more in the city's reservoir. Customers won't be allowed to water their landscapes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition to the irrigation restrictions, area pools can't be refilled, and washing down hardscape surfaces will be banned.

Violators will face fines of $100-$500. A city spokesman said the city opened 2,400 enforcement cases and levied several hundred fines during 2009, when cutbacks were at 15 percent.
