Palm Desert’s Cooperative Landscape Water Management Program, which aims to inspire residents to replace turf with desert landscaping, is scheduled to start Tuesday, March 9.
Created through a partnership between the city and the Coachella Valley Water District, the program offers eligible residents rebates of $2 per square foot of turf they replace with desert vegetation and drip irrigated plants. Rebates are capped at $2,000.
Rebates apply only to front yards and retrofits must include a new SMART irrigation controller, city officials said.
For those not ready to give up their front lawns, the program will offer rebates to replace older sprinkler heads with newer generation versions at $5 per sprinkler head. A SMART irrigation controller would also need to be installed, officials said.
The water district and the city each committed $110,000 to fund the program.
Homeowners associations also are eligible to participate for rebates of up to $10,000, according to a city news release.
