Shawn Kelly

ASLA Chapter: Wisconsin

Category: Service to the Profession

Company/academic title: Faculty, University of Wisconsin, Madison College of Agriculture and Life Sciences

Education: Bachelor of science in agriculture in 1978 and his master of landscape architecture in 1987, both from the University of Arizona–Tucson.

Shawn Kelly was nominated by the Wisconsin Chapter for his service-oriented efforts for landscape architecture. For three decades he has served ASLA at the national and state level, advanced the visibility of the profession within the regional Midwest, served outside of his official job duties at the university and contributed to the advancement of municipal stormwater management strategies and smart growth planning in his hometown. He also has worked closely with the Ojibwa community in Wisconsin to break down cultural barriers through community design and planning.

Thoughts from a Peer: “Without Shawn’s perseverance, the licensure effort in Wisconsin would likely have come to an end two legislative sessions ago. But thanks to his tenacious advocacy and leadership, the movement toward fully licensed landscape architects in Wisconsin continues to move ahead.”—Michael Blumenfeld of Blumenfeld & Associates

Comment: While I was nominated in both Service and Knowledge, my Fellowship was awarded in the category of Knowledge. I have satisfied my two terms as Trustee for the Wisconsin Chapter of ASLA and now serve as Chapter Advocate. I also chair the Chapter's Center for Sustainable Education, a LACES provider, as well as the Department of Landscape Architecture's Center for Sustainable Design at University of Wisconsin, Madison. I continue to teach there full time and maintain my practice, found at kdgllc.com.
