2018 Gold Medal Awards

The recipients of the Gold Medal Awards were announced live at the NRPA Annual Conference in Indiana. The judges consist of five park and recreation professionals, selected for their experience and knowledge in the profession.


In collaboration, the National Recreation and Park Association and the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration have announced the winners of the 2018 National Gold Medal Grand Plaque Awards for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management.

Founded in 1965 and sponsored by Musco Lighting, LLC, the Gold Medal Awards program recognizes communities that exemplify park and recreation excellence. According to NRPA, the elements included in this recognition are "long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development and agency recognition."

The recipients of the Gold Medal Award are as follows:
Class 1 (population > 400, 000)
  • Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation in Lake Worth, Fla.
Class 2 (population 150,001 - 400,000)
  • City of Arlington Parks and Recreation in Arlington, Texas
Class 3 (population 75,001 - 150,000)
  • Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department in Bloomington, Ind.
Class 4 (population 30,001 - 75,000)
  • Town of Castle Rock Parks and Recreation in Castle Rock, Colo.
Class 5 (population < 30,000)
  • Homewood-Flossmoor Park District in Flossmoor, Ill
Armed Forces Recreation Award
  • Naval Air Station Pensacola in Pensacola, Fla.
