Mowing 50 Lawns in 50 States

Rodney Smith Jr. has already completed two tours across America, mowing a free lawn in every state. He recently received his master's degree in Social Work and volunteers at schools across the nation to teach lawn mower safety.

Rodney came up with the 50 Yard Challenge, which tasks kids worldwide with mowing 50 free lawns in their communities. For every ten lawns the kids mow, they get a different color shirt. After 50 lawns, Rodney will even personally fly out to the volunteer and give them a free lawn mower for their service. To date, 20 kids have completed the challenge and 239 kids worldwide are currently taking part.

Rodney uses a Snapper push lawnmower for his pro-bono work and one of his most memorable experiences was mowing a 1.7-acre lawn for a man with brain damage.

One hot Alabamian afternoon, Rodney Smith Jr., a graduate of Alabama A&M University and a Bermuda native, witnessed an elderly man having a hard time mowing his lawn.

"I was leaving my school one day and I came across an elderly man mowing his lawn outside and it looked like he was really struggling so I pulled over and helped him mow," Rodney said. "After I helped him mow, that night I decided I would help mow free lawns for the elderly, disabled, single moms and veterans."

At first, Rodney's goal was to mow 40 lawns by the end of the winter. But, he reached his goal so quickly that he set a new goal of mowing 100 lawns for free before winter.

"After I hit my 100th lawn a month later, that's when I got the idea to start Raising Men Lawn Care Service. We still mow lawns for the elderly, disabled, single moms and veterans, but now we also get kids involved and show them the importance of giving back to the community."

Since 2016, Rodney's mission has gone viral, with many major news outlets covering his story. The local Ford dealership even made a commercial about Rodney and gave him a free F-150.

Since 2016, Rodney has completed his mission to mow one lawn in each of the 50 states. After that, he did it again with 5 lawns in each of the 50 states. Now, his new goal is seven free lawns across all seven continents.
