Winner: Concrete Paver - Residential (< 3,000 sq. ft.)
Foutch Residence, Logan, Iowa
Contractor: Paver Designs, LLC, Omaha
Manufacturer: Belgard and Techniseal
Designer: Justin Hampton, Paver Designs LLC

Cutting into the hillside created the necessary space for a new, enlarged entertainment space. The fire pit is a single boulder with a large pebble mosaic reflective wall. Paver Designs, a two-man father and son company, completed all the project work. The custom inlays were drawn freehand with chalk onto the pavers, then cut into the patio. The colors for the border and the inlays mimic the color of the trim and intricate woodwork on the 100-year old home.

Honorable Mention: Concrete Pavers in a Commercial Setting (>15,000 sq. ft.)
Denver International Airport - Weston Hotel
Contractor: Rocky Mountain Hardscape, Denver
Manufacturer: Pavestone
Designer: Stewart Landscape

The 82,000 sq. ft. plaza atop Denver's airport's Transit Center, designed by Gensler, connects Denver's Jeppesen Terminal to the Westin Hotel beneath a steel and glass-cantilevered structure built by Mortenson, Hunt and Saunders. The patterns of the joints between the plaza's concrete and granite pavers are intended "to emulate the way earth moves when tectonic plates shift." The pavers segue to porcelain tiles. The use of locally sourced concrete pavers with recycled components (fly ash and iron oxide pigments) helped achieve LEED Platinum status. "Performance issues" with granite pavers required replacing them with 'Onyx City Stone' pavers with a shot blast finish, which emulate the look of granite.

Winner: Porcelain - Commercial
Sterling Private Residences, Chicago
Contractor: C.R. Schmidt, Inc., Warrenville, Ill.
Manufacturer: Tile Tech Pavers
Designer: RADA Architects

An unused roof surface was retrofitted with porcelain pavers to give residents a formal recreation space. Porcelain pavers are a type of ceramic tile made from fine, dense clay and fired at high temperatures. They are a great alternative to heavy concrete pavers. These lightweight pavers are permanently adhered to a tray of the same size as the pavers and locked into place to prevent wind uplift. According to Architrex, porcelain pavers have exceptional stain, scratch and frost resistances, require little maintenance, and a 3/4" thick porcelain paver supports up to a 1-ton static load.

Honorable Mention: Segmental Retaining Walls - Residential, Cromwell, Conn.
Contractor/Installer: Bahler Brothers, South Windsor, Conn.
Manufacturer: Techo-Bloc
Designer: Jen Kloter

This home is atop a bluff overlooking the Connecticut River. The home's retaining wall had to be torn down. The new design placed the wall 5 feet to the front of the existing one's location, and thus gained an additional 20' of width for the patio area above. The engineered walls are about 170 feet long; the tallest section is 15' tall. The new installation required platforms, ramps and pathways to move materials and equipment around the very narrow site.

Winner: East Windsor Historical Society
East Windsor, Conn.
Clay Brick - Permeable
Contractor/Installer: Bahler Brothers
Product Manufacturer: Pine Hall Brick
Designer: Bahler Brothers

The East Windsor Historical Society renovated this circa 1785 home and needed an outdoor meeting space. Wheelchair access was required. The sponsors did not want any drainage structures on the patio. A permeable paver installation seemed to be the solution. The colors of the clay permeable pavers compliment the newly renovated architecture. The walls and steps were built with native, salvaged and imported Brownstone. The walls are wired for lighting.

As seen in LASN magazine, February 2018.
