At ONLA's annual business meeting on January 16, 2017, the association's members chose their 2017 Board of Directors. Newly elected were Josh Posey, Buckeye Resources, president; Andy Doesburg, Thornton Landscape, president-elect; James Beardslee, Beardslee Nursery, board member; Lenny Garrard, Bobcat Enterprises Columbus, board member. Continuing their terms in 2017 are Steve Maddox, Michell's, immediate past president; and board members Tom Hilgeman, White Oak Garden Center, Ryan Kolb, Ryan Kolb Co, LLC; Mindy Moore, Cardinal Landscape Tree Service & Lawn Care; Steve O'Neal, Columbus State Community College; Ellen Gallucci Purcell, Riepenhoff Landscape Ltd.

The association's annual conference, Midwest Green Industry Experience (MGIX), took place January 16-18, and welcomed nearly 5,000 attendees. The conference included more than 90 education sessions, and a tradeshow featuring 250 exhibitors.

Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association welcomed 250 high school students for the second annual Ohio High School Landscape Olympics, an educational competition where students could test their skills and learn more about a career in the green industry on November 2 and 3 at OSU ATI in Wooster, Ohio. The event began with a pizza party on Thursday afternoon. A career exploration event with more than 25 companies gave students the opportunity to meet with green industry leaders and learn more about careers available to them in the industry.

Students from 20 schools and career centers with horticulture programs competed in ten events in the afternoon on Thursday, November 2 and throughout the day on Friday, November 3.

The Olympics ended with an awards ceremony on Friday afternoon with Ohio Hi-Point Career Center being named champion team.

AT ONLA's 44th annual Landscape Awards, which was held during the association's annual conference, Midwest Green Industry Experience, 22 award-winning projects were announced. Taking the honors for Project of the Year was GreenScapes Landscape Co. from Columbus, Ohio for their "Mohawk Street" installation. The award program is the largest of its kind in the state, and it encourages landscape contractors, landscape designers and landscape architects to continue their efforts to raise the industry's image through consistent use of quality materials and outstanding workmanship. The program also strives to raise public awareness of the important role landscape design plays in environmental improvement, property values, and quality of life.



The following recipients of the 2017 Professional Awards, Scholarships, and Landscape Awards were honored at the ONLA Awards Celebration and Dessert Reception on Sunday, January 15 at MGIX.
