Orange Street Studio

Orange Street Studio was founded in 1998 as a landscape architecture and urban design firm in Los Angeles. The firm delivers contemporary landscape architecture design and master planning, integrating compositional aspects from the arts and architecture, always designing with the cultural and ecology of each site in mind. These principles result in designs unique to each client.

The firm maintains a diverse studio environment that encourages collaboration within the office and with clients, architects and other consultants. This collaboration produces designed spaces that are richer, more meaningful, sustainable and lasting.

Founder & Principle: Michael Schneider, ASLA. Michael has 25 years of experience in landscape architecture, urban design and construction management. He's an RLA and has an MLA in urban design from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Associate Designer: James Dinh. James has a MLA from UC Berkeley. He has worked at the offices of R|H|A|A in San Francisco and SWA in Laguna Beach, and interned for Hood Design in Oakland and Peter Walker and Partners in Berkeley.

Sandy Place, Santa Barbara, Calif.


As part of the complete renovation of a Mediterranean-style house into a light-filled contemporary residence, the gardens, with views of the Santa Ynez mountains, were designed to seamlessly connect the indoors and outdoors. As an extension of the pared-down elegant simplicity of the interior and architecture, the outdoors spaces juxtapose such materials as travertine stone with Corten steel. The result is a clean, contemporary look that is also warm, tactile and grounded to the California landscape. The steel planters, water feature and long linear stone benches possess a sculptural quality, in addition to their functional aspects. Crushed gravel is used as the groundcover throughout to create a textural horizontal plane that acts as a foil to the raised planters, walls and trees. The restrained horticultural palette includes climate-appropriate plants and California natives. The surrounding trees are incorporated into the garden design to create an expansive spatial quality. Santa Barbara has a long tradition of estate gardens, and this contemporary garden furthers this tradition by celebrating the unique beauty of the California landscape rather than emulating those of Europe.

Best Western, Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles, Calif.


The complete renovation of an iconic hotel included the design of "plaza" parking areas, the perimeter landscape and the streetscape. To accentuate the pop-appeal and super graphics of the architecture, plants were chosen for their bold sculptural quality. A screen of trees along the perimeter conceals the at-grade parking lots, which take up the majority of the outdoor spaces. The trees also help to define a plaza when the parking lot is used as an event space. Well-known lines from famous Hollywood movies are inlaid as stainless steel text in bands of concrete in the parking plaza. Vegetated areas serve to collect runoff in the paved parking areas. Potted plants placed in various locations punctuate moments of visual interest. The combined result is both bold and dramatic.

Maxella, Residential Living, Marina del Rey, Calif.


This six-story resort like mixed-use development contains 244 residential units and 9,000 sq. ft. of commercial space. The project achieved LEED Silver rating. Tall date palms line both sides of the driveway to the complex. On the podium level is a circular family-friendly "beach" (the ocean beach is a short walk away). Residents enjoy a large pool and dining in grilling areas outfitted with kitchens and outdoor heaters. Other spaces offer quiet sitting or communal gatherings. There are lush plantings in the courtyards, and raised planters and planted medians at street level to infiltrate runoff. Adjacent to the complex is a large park with drifts of California-native plants and a dog area.

Hermès, Beverly Hills, Calif.


Founded in 1837, French luxury goods retailer Hermes is known worldwide for its beautiful detailed clothing and crafted decorative items. The landscape design for the rooftop renovation strove to embody the refined beauty and craftsmanship ideals of Hermes. Like a stage, the rooftop was designed to accommodate gala events and art exhibitions, but to also offer solitary contemplation. The ipe deck folds up on two sides to form bleacher-like seating. The 3-story roof deck presents billowing grasses and bamboo, a small water feature and a 10' high water wall.

Roseland Village, Roseland, Sonoma County, Calif.


As a public-private partnership, Roseland Village is designed as a walkable addition to Sebastopol Road's commercial district. The design reflects a community-driven design informed by extensive community outreach. Roseland Village will serve as a regional market center for the Roseland area's rich and diverse culture, products and services. The streets, open spaces and buildings are designed as a holistic environment. All components relate in specific ways to create a sociable urban neighborhood and town center with cultural, educational and recreational attractions. The commercial frontage along Sebastopol Road is developed with a 1-acre plaza bracketed by a 2-story multivendor Mercado Food Hall Building to the east, and a 2-story civic building designed to accommodate a public library and a neighborhood Boys and Girls Club to the west. Moving to the north, there are two 3 and 4-story multifamily residential buildings that face the plaza and the Joe Rodota Trail, providing a welcoming entrance for bike and pedestrian traffic coming from the SMART station, Railroad Square and downtown Santa Rosa.

The streets are designed with double row of trees surrounding the plaza, providing shade and a sense of enclosure and nature. The wide sidewalks and corners allow people to safety meet and linger. Informed by community workshops, the guiding narrative for the Plaza builds on the idea of "urban vitality in nature." A long trellis connects the Mercado and the civic buildings along Sebastopol Road. The plaza balances paved and green space areas. There's a space for "imaginative play" located at the northeast corner. The Mercado, which opens onto the Plaza, has its own paved area for outdoor seating, dining and event space.
