Choosing the Right LED Light
Plan Ahead for Holiday Displays

image

Creative Displays, a seller of LED holiday lights and decorations, has recently switched to surface-mounted diodes for their replacement bulbs. The SMD bulbs last up to 100,000 hours and use half the electricity of standard LEDs.

LEDs cost less and use less electricity because they flicker 120 times each second, a rate imperceptible to the human eye. Though they are available in most colors, their longevity makes them all "green."

When it comes to purchasing LED holiday lights, you have a wide range of choices. Some LEDs are rated at 20,000 hours while others may be rated as high as 100,000 hours. Retail-grade LED bulbs are often half-wave rectified while commercial-grade LED bulbs are generally full-wave rectified. The IP ratings, a classification for protection against intrusion, for LEDs can vary substantially, which means they can either be "resistant" to water and dust or waterproof and dustproof. Here are a few tips to help you make the right choices for your holiday LED display.

Incredible Value
Like most hi-tech stuff, LED lighting has continued to progress in both performance and affordability. The first LED holiday lights that appeared on the market over a decade ago were cost-prohibitive, at about $5 or $6 apiece. But as demand increased and manufacturing processes changed to meet that demand, the cost of LEDs has continued to drop dramatically. Today, the latest C7 SMD LED replacement bulbs shine super bright, last pretty much forever, and cost about a buck apiece.

New SMD LEDs
This year, Creative Displays, a seller of holiday lighting, displays and accessories, decided to switch to the new SMD (Surface-Mounted Diode) LED technology for C7 and C9 replacement bulbs as well as several other animated displays. SMD LEDs are mounted and soldered by automated assembly equipment onto a circuit board that requires no leads, epoxy or surrounding packaging, giving them a brighter glow and wider viewing angle. Aside from shining brighter, these new SMD LED retrofit bulbs last twice as long as standard LEDs (rated at 100,000 hours) and consume half the amount of electricity, just 1/2-watt per bulb.

Waterproof, Dustproof and Virtually Unbreakable
If you're looking for an LED bulb that's waterproof and dustproof, check the IP Rating. The International Protection Marking Code or IP Rating is a standard used worldwide to measure the ability of electrical instruments to withstand the contact of exterior forces such as dust, air and water. All of the C7 and C9 SMD LED retrofit bulbs Creative Displays carries have an IP Rating of 65, which is the same rating as many high-end cameras. As an added bonus, the faceted lens that provides protection against the elements is built of super-strong polystyrene. So unless your client has a nearsighted elephant as a house pet, breakage is something that won't keep you awake at night.

LED Lights Without the Flicker
One reason LED bulbs last so much longer than incandescent bulbs is because they're not always "turned on." Light emitting diodes actually flash on and off at a rate of speed that's virtually imperceptible to the human eye, unless you purchase lower quality, retail-grade LEDs. Many of the less expensive, poorly manufactured LED mini-light brands sold in big box stores are half-wave rectified. These bulbs turn off and on at a rate of 60 times per second, which may seem pretty fast, but to the naked eye they will appear to "flicker." All of Creative Displays' LED replacement bulbs and LED mini lights are full-wave rectified, which means they turn off and on twice as fast as half-wave rectified LEDs - 120 times per second. They don't flicker. They just shine bright.

Going Green
LED holiday lights come in every color of the rainbow, but perhaps green is the most important, as in "environmentally green." Consider the fact that most incandescent bulbs are generally rated at about 3,000 hours. That means every few years your incandescent bulb string ends up in the local landfill and you end up buying more light strands for the next holiday season. Now consider the fact that our new SMD LED replacement bulbs are rated at 100,000 hours. That's 33 times longer life and 33 fewer light strings to leave at the curb for the garbage man!

But the most amazing thing LED lights deliver is energy efficiency. For example, a 50-foot long string of Pro-Grade(R) red LED mini lights consumes just 2.4 watts of electricity! That's 2.4 watts for not just one bulb, but for the full string of 50 bulbs! The numbers are equally astounding for the new SMD LED C7 and C9 bulbs. Each bulb uses just 0.58 watts of elecvtricity, or about 30 watts for a full 50-light string! Longevity and efficiency are bad news for the garbage man, but good news for Mother Nature ... and December utility bills.
