Woodruff Park Splash Pad and Playground
Where Musical Play Meets Water Play

Landscape Architecture by Gullatte Associates, Inc.

Since opening in 2015, the interactive Woodruff Park Splash Pad and Playground has fast become a popular landmark, Columbus, Georgia. The instruments in the playground were provided and installed by Freenotes Harmony Park. Their "Premium Ensemble" collection includes: 1. "Pegasus," 2. "Swirl," 3. "Tuned Drums," 4. "Imbarimba," and 5. "Contrabass Chimes."

The Woodruff Park Splash Pad and Playground is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River in Uptown Columbus, Georgia. Blending sound design with quality materials and workmanship on a three acre centrally located green space has made this park a tremendous success.

The two main components of this park are the splash pad and adjacent playground. The splash pad is nestled between berms and large boulders harvested from the nearby Chattahoochee River. Thirty-two jets of water playfully delight users during the day and after dark with colorful LED uplighting. The splash pad was built in 2014 by Headwaters Construction, Cumming, Georgia, and all fountain components were designed and installed by Roman Fountains, Atlanta.

The playground combines sculptural, creative playground elements with outdoor musical instruments. The main playground elements are from Landscape Structures, Inc. ADS, Atlanta, provided the product and installation of the equipment and surfacing. The play surface is made of EPDM, a synthetic rubber with color patterns and shapes designed to emulate the image of the adjacent Chattahoochee River. Gary M. Gullatte, ASLA, of Gullatte Associates, Inc., Columbus, Georgia, served as lead design professional and project manager for both the splash pad and playground projects.

As seen in LASN magazine, September 2017.
