The 53-acre first phase of the Orange County Great Park Sports Park in Irvine, Calif., debuted August 5, 2017 with the official opening of the 2,500 seat soccer stadium, multiple soccer fields, a 25 tennis court complex, 5 sand volleyball courts and a playground.

The "Great Park" in Orange County, Calif. (Irvine) has been an ongoing development since 2005, and reported assiduously ever since in LASN. (See, for example, the March 2006 LASN feature, "A Great Park Needs a Great Process: Choosing the Next Olmsted ... And the Winner is: Ken Smith, Landscape Architect, New York, New York" (article #6517 on landscapeonline.com).

Well, the park is finally starting to look great, and the Great Park Sports Park is being touted (when it's fully built out) as the largest public multi-sports facility in California.

The Sports Park, planned in conjunction with the city of Irvine, is paid for and built by FivePoint's partnership (Heritage Fields, LLC) for the city of Irvine. Emile Haddad is chairman and CEO of FivePoint. The company is building 4,600 homes adjacent to the park, and in turn committed to developing 688 acres of the Great Park, with 194 acres devoted to the Sports Park. FivePoint is spending approximately $250 million to create its portion of the Great Park, an estimated $75 million more than the city of Irvine agreed to. About $30 million of that construction cost was spent to remove runways, hangars and other structures from the closed El Toro Marine Corp Air Station El Toro, and to complete infrastructure in the park, i.e., roads, water and electrical.

Later phases of work will include an 18-hole golf course, trails, agricultural fields, other playgrounds, open space and a wildlife corridor.

Meanwhile, FivePoint has teamed up with a concert promoter to build a 12,000 seat temporary amphitheater next to the Great Park that will open Aug. 26.
