The Future is Airless
Michelin Unveils New Skid Steer Tires

Designed for use on skid steer loaders, Michelin's Tweel SSL Airless Radial is the latest in tire technology for construction equipment. According to the manufacturer, the tire requires less maintenance and down time compared to traditional pneumatic tires.

The tires have a wear life that is reported to be two to three times that of a pneumatic tire at equal tread depth. Additionally, the energy transfer within the poly- resin spokes is said to reduce the "bounce" associated with pneumatic tires.

Michelin Tweel Technologies has introduced a Hard Surface Traction (HST) version of its award-winning MICHELIN 12N16.5 X TWEEL SSL Airless Radial Tire. For skid steer operators who work on hard or highly abrasive surfaces, such as asphalt and paving, tires tend to have a short tread life due to the aggressive nature of these applications. Operators are constantly looking for options with excellent wear characteristics, but many cannot afford any major compromise in off-the-pavement traction.

The TWEEL SSL HST is designed for operators who are involved with construction, transfer stations, waste handling, pavement maintenance or material handling and can benefit from the longevity a hard-surface solution offers without major sacrifices in off-the-pavement traction. Advantages of an airless radial include the elimination of the risk of a flat tire and the ability to stay in operation with limited downtime to maximize profitability and cost per hour. Other reported benefits are: easy mounting, improved damage resistance and operator comfort, reduced operator fatigue and longer wear life than standard pneumatic tires.

"The development of this product was in direct response to customer demand," said Justin L. Brock, the manufactuer's compact line business manager in North America. "Our customers are looking for a long-wearing, hard-surface solution that also provides traction in off-the-pavement applications when needed".

Available in the United States, Canada and Mexico, these airless radials are constructed with a 48/32nd tread depth containing a high scrub compound to help increase tread life. With 8/32nd of undertread, the outer core tread can be retreaded multiple times. The spokes are specially designed to enhance the tires' endurance.
