After managing the New Jersey Landscape Contractors Association (NJLCA) for the past seven years, green industry veteran Jody Shilan, MLA, has decided to step down as executive director of the NJLCA, so that he can work as an industry consultant, speaker and writer on a full-time basis.
During his time at the NJLCA, Shilan implemented a wide reaching one-man communication strategy centered on generating original content. He found a way of explaining the world of landscape design and sales in a new and humorous manner.
"I put out a lot of original content and I don't use social media. I take a different spin than others because I am out there attending trade shows and speaking," said Shilan. "I aim for my readers to get memorable, honest and real information, I call it 'edutainment,'" he added.
Like many in the landscape industry, Shilan started out with a push mower and a can of gas. Now with some 40 years of industry experience under his belt, he is likely to be speaking at a landscape industry trade show, training landscape design/build contractors how to dramatically increase their sales utilizing his "Ultimate Design/Build Sales Process", or writing a new trade secret for his membership website www.FromDesign2Build.com at the local Starbucks.
"In 2016 we proudly celebrated our 50th anniversary as a trade association, so I really feel like I'm leaving on a high note," says Shilan. "Even though I am moving up, I am not moving out. I look forward to seeing NJLCA members at many of our upcoming events. However, next time, it will be from the sidelines."
