Momentum Index Ends 2016 With Solid December

DMI Now At Its Highest Level in Eight Years

image

The Dodge Momentum Index, a monthly measure of the first or initial report of nonresidential building projects in planning, rose nearly three percent in December and finished 2016 in stellar fashion.

The Dodge Momentum Index finished 2016 on a strong note, climbing 2.9 percent to 136.7 in December, reaching an eight-year high in the process. The Momentum Index, maintained by Dodge Data and Analytics, is a monthly measure of the first or initial report of nonresidential building projects in planning. These reports typically lead construction spending by a full year.

December's gain was largely due to a 5.7 percent jump in commercial sector projects. Commercial has risen 38 percent in 2016, and more than offset DMI's institutional segment, which fell 1.7 percent in December and has dropped six percent for the year.
