The Horticultural Research Institute, AmericanHort's research affiliate, will join millions of people, corporations and nonprofits around the world for a global day of generosity on Tuesday November 29, 2016. The event known as #GivingTueday, is celebrated annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely anticipated Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping events.
The event was created to counter the commercialization and consumerism often associated with the holiday season. The event takes advantage of the power of social media to bring about real world change that locally impacts communities. #GivingTuesday is designed to transform the way people think and talk about giving during the holiday season.
The 92nd Street Y founded #GivingTuesday in 2012 in partnership with the United Nations Foundation. The effort harnesses the collective power of social media and unique partnerships between individuals, businesses and corporations to get funds directly to where they are needed most.
The Horticultural Research Institute is completely funded by green industry philanthropists and businesses. The HRI has provided more than $7 million in funds to research projects covering a broad range of production, environmental, and business issues important to the green industry.
By participating in #GivingTuesday, HRI hopes to continue raising the funds needed for its nonprofit work providing effective, efficient and relevant solutions for the green industry.
