Sixteen Park Projects and Programs Win Grants from Disney and NRPA

A new screened pavilion will be built at the Nature Pavilion at Pine Island Conservation Area in Brevard County, Fla. thanks to the Parks Build Community Campaign. School groups and the public will enjoy wildlife viewing, arts and crafts, and the outdoors.

The NRPA and The Walt Disney Company, including Disney Citizenship, Disney|ABC Television Group and ESPN, have announced the winners of the national Parks Build Community campaign, which helps revitalize and restore local parks and park programs. Throughout Earth Month in April, the public voted to direct grant funding for park improvement projects.

Fifteen park projects were selected and each received a $20,000 grant to help make improvements or expand programs. Pennypack Environmental Center in Philadelphia was the write-in winner and will also receive a $20,000 grant.

The other winning parks and projects--as determined by public vote--are:

o Austin, TX: Battle Bend Park Basketball Court
o Brevard County, FL: Nature Pavilion at Pine Island Conservation Area
o Charlotte, NC: Druid Hills Park Community Garden
o Chicago, IL: Community Roots Demonstration Garden
o Durham, NC: Holt School Road Park Playground and Trail o Fresno, CA: Fresno Life and Environmental Science Program
o Hartford, CT: Keney Park Basketball Courts
o Houston, TX: Northshore Nature Walk
o Los Angeles, CA: Sylmar Recreation Center Splash Pad
o Miami, FL: Goulds Park Community Garden
o New York, NY: Mott Hall Bridges Living Laboratory
o Orlando, FL: Bill Frederick Park Trail Improvements
o Philadelphia, PA: Glavin Playground
o San Francisco, CA: Bernal Heights Community Garden
o Seattle, WA: Rainier Vista Youth Environmental Leadership Institute

Winning projects will begin this summer, and volunteers will lend their time and talent to help each project come to life. Visit NRPA.org/BeInspired to learn more about Parks Build Community and the winning projects.
