Kansas Bill Redefines Architecture, Engineering and Landscape Architecture Practices
Under the new Kansas statute
signed by Gov. Sam Brownback
that takes effect July 1, 2014,

April New Home Sales Halt Decline

Two consecutive months of declining sales for new single-family homes ended in April with a 6.4 percent increase over the March rate. The 433,000-unit seasonally adjusted annual rate is 4.2 percent less than the April 2013 sales pace, however, as the market remains sluggish following the slow winter.

Salmon Bay Autism Inclusive Playground

For the Salmon Bay K-8 playground in Seattle, the landscape architects carefully selected materials and equipment to enhance sensory experiences. Inevitably, children will use play equipment not only in the intended way, like the "spinner" (left) and the slide, but adapt it to their own uses. Some children like to congregate beneath the slide, and others enjoy placing the soles of their feet on the underside of the Roller Slide to feel the vibration of the slider.

Tiers of Enjoyment

The swimming pool at this residence in Tarzana, Calif., was remodeled by Green Scene Landscaping and Pools, which added a vanishing edge spillway and a tiled spa at one end. To build the fire bowls flanking the pool, the contractors started with precast concrete bowls that were then lined with refractory fireclay. Stainless steel gas rings from Hearth Products Controls Co. and lava rock complete their construction. Their columns are built of block, veneered with honey ledge stone and capped with cast-in-place concrete. The same stone was used on the front of the 30-inch-high spillway. Mosaic tiles were installed on its top and bottom edges. The flooring throughout the project is a mixture of Sweetwater flagstone and stamped, textured and colored concrete. Raised concrete
pads across the shallow pool adjacent to the spillway lead to the lower
seating area.

June 2014 Economic Roundup

Contractors added 32,000 workers to their payrolls in April, cutting construction unemployment to 9.4 percent, down from 13.2 percent a year earlier and marking the lowest April rate in seven years. Total employment reached 6.0 million, the highest level since June 2009. The unemployment rate has fallen from 21.8 percent since April 2010, but the number of workers who last worked in construction has declined by 1.1 million since then, and the industry has added less than 450,000 jobs.

Mild Growth Boosts April Existing Home Sales

The sales rate of existing homes increased by 1.3 percent in April, rising for the first time this year but remaining nearly seven percent behind April 2013 levels. Gains in the West and South offset a modest decline in the Midwest, and the Northeast, which has struggled all year to recover from a harsh winter, was unchanged.
