February Construction Materials Prices Increase for Second Consecutive Month

After standing pat for most of 2013, the producer price index that measures construction inputs increased for the second consecutive month in February. A 74 percent year-over-year surge in natural gas prices, attributed to increased heating costs around the country caused by a harsh winter, drove the index's expansion.

February Fuel Demand Hits 16-Year Low

Demand for petroleum products fell 0.6 percent year-over-year to 18.5 million barrels per day in February, according to the American Petroleum Institute. While wintry conditions across most of the nation caused a spike in demand for heating oil, a decline in gasoline purchases caused by fewer cars on the road led to the lowest level of demand in February since 1998.

Permeable Pavers Surpass Concrete In Long-Term Test

The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) installed three test sections of permeable pavers on campus next to conventional concrete pavers to test the difference in durability and stormwater management ability in the fall of 2007. When inspections of the surfacing were positive following a harsh Minnesota winter, UMD decided to expand its permeable paver installations. Tall sabal palmettos, the state tree of Florida and South Carolina, are ubiquitous throughout the park.

''Resort Style'' Lighting for New Landscape

In 2013, the owners of this Omaha, Neb., home contacted McKay Landscape Lighting to overhaul the landscape lighting. McKay had installed lighting in 1999, and again in 2010 under a new owner. The new landscape on the property included a new paver driveway, a pondless water feature and a number of new plantings in the front and back yards. The client sought to light the dark corners for general security, but also wanted "curb appeal" at night. There are 283 fixtures on site, and seven transformers (900 and 1200-watt).

New Home Sales Fall to Five-Month Low in February

New single-family home sales fell to the lowest level since last September in February, declining 3.3 percent from a downwardly revised January figure to a 440,000-unit annual rate (seasonally adjusted). Harsh winter weather was the primary cause of the downfall, but a recent downturn in homebuilder confidence and ongoing struggles in new home construction could foreshadow a deeper trough for the housing market than economists expected this year.
