NAHB Study: National Consumers Prefer Brick

Thirty-four percent of respondents to a national NAHB survey on homebuyer trends ranked brick as their preferred home exterior; vinyl siding placed second at 21 percent, followed by stone at 16 percent, stucco at 12 percent, wood at 7 percent and fiber cement at 5 percent. Ranked by price point, brick was tops among home exteriors in the $150,000 - $499,000 range, while vinyl was preferred in the $150,000 or less range; brick ranked second to stone in the $500,000+ range, with stucco in third place.

May Construction Unemployment Sets Another Five-Year Low

Construction employment in May totaled 5,804,000, a 3.4 percent increase from the prior year that yielded an additional 189,000 jobs. The unemployment rate for workers who last worked in construction dropped to 10.8 percent from 14.2 percent in May 2012 (not seasonally adjusted), and the number of unemployed construction workers shrank over the year by 259,000 to 891,000. The latest numbers were the best May figures since 2008.

Big Brother Data Mining

The Utah Data Center, code name Bumblehive, is the new centerpiece of the National Security Administration. The compound's exterior building construction is complete, and was celebrated May 30 in a closed ribbon cutting ceremony. Invitations went out to "our most loyal partners at the local, state, and federal level." The information technology is now going in. The facility is expected to be operational by October.

Maryland County Hikes "Rain Tax" for Stormwater Program

In 2010, the EPA ordered states within the Chesapeake Bay watershed to reduce the amount of stormwater-borne pollutants reaching the estuary. State legislation mandating stormwater mitigation programs in Maryland's 10 largest jurisdictions has culminated in the Charles County board of commissioners tripling the county's environmental services fee, known locally as a "rain tax," on property owners, which will fund the program's $2.1 million budget.

South Miami's new equipment ordinance, which went into effect June 20, restricts when lawn maintenance tools -- including lawn mowers, edgers, weed trimmers, leaf blowers, chain saws, chippers and stump grinders -- can be used near residences and outdoor restaurants.

Urban Land Institute Names New York Chairman
Longtime Urban Land Institute leader Robert Lieber, executive managing director of the Island Capital Group in New York City and former deputy mayor for economic development in New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration, has been selected to chair ULI New York. ULI New York serves about 2,000 members. Lieber will serve on a voluntary basis for a three-year term that begins July 1, 2013.

Dow Herbicide Now Effectively Banned in the Northeast

An herbicide that tainted Green Mountain Compost last summer can no longer legally be used on Vermont pastures. New labeling, adapted voluntarily by Dow Herbicide, prohibits the use of products such as Milestone on New England pastureland, but compost companies still worry the chemical will find its way into their products.
