Contractors Squeezed by Growing Materials Costs
A 14.4 percent spike in diesel fuel prices nationwide through August and September contributed to the second month in a row the AGC's producer price index increased. Costs for other materials used in building projects also ticked upward, including copper, aluminum, lumber and steel.

Not Enough Change in 2013 Construction Forecast

McGraw Hill Construction is predicting 6 percent growth for the construction starts in 2013, fueled largely by private investment and continuing housing market expansion. The forecast, only slightly improved over the 2012 estimate of 5 percent growth, gives little indication that the industry will return to healthy, prerecession levels anytime soon.

EPA Names New Texas-Area Admin
Environmentalists were pleased with the EPA's appointment of Ron Curry as the top administrator for Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma. The term of office is indefinite and does not require Senate confirmation, but Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., promised "extensive oversight" of Curry.

Weather and Trees
Recent hurricanes, including Superstorm Sandy, which ravaged the east coast recently, point to a serious flaw in the landscape codes that should be addressed by planning departments in cities and towns across the country. The flaw results in residents of towns and cities in hurricane susceptible regions from understanding the storm resistance of various species of shade trees and how they handle . . .

49ers Stadium Bioretention

Workers crane in a large bioretention module for installation in the San Francisco 49ers' new stadium complex. The bioretention system collects and treats runoff for more than five acres of concrete parking lot. Because it was on the critical path of site development, before virtually any other construction could begin, there was heavy time pressure to install the system quickly. Overall, the project took five workers 320 hours to complete.

California Central Coast Gets Serious About Stormwater

Central coast-area water officials in California unanimously adopted new rules requiring developers to reduce runoff from impervious surfaces in their projects like roads, roofs and parking lots. Permeable and porous paving are options for processing runoff and improving water quality.

Green Roofs Rising
According to the industry research firm Lux Research, green roof installations will rise 70 percent to 204 million square meters by 2017, and account for $7 billion of the landscape market. This presents a $2 billion opportunity to suppliers, and design opportunities for landscape architects.

Gardens of Mercy: Baltimore Hospital's Green Roof

A three-year, $400 million expansion of Baltimore's Mercy Medical Center culminated in the December 2010 opening of the 18-story Mary Catherine Bunting Center. The hospital enhanced the healing environment with three sustainable, therapeutic roof gardens terraced over three floors. Tree plantings include amelanchiers and Armstrong maples, and a Cherry laurel hedge runs along patient windows to create space and privacy.

The Gates Foundation: Seattle's Scenic Sustainability Showcase

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's central headquarters in Seattle, Wash. includes two four-story, energy-efficient buildings; green roofs and extensive plantings; and a sustainable, rainwater-fed water feature planted with rushes and cattails beneath a wooden boardwalk. After more than seven years of planning and construction, the site was awarded LEED Platinum status in October 2011.

Minnesota Warns Against Bittersweet

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is cautioning Minnesota landscapers to avoid the vibrant Oriental bittersweet, a woody vine commonly used for landscaping and holiday decorating. When established, this invasive vine can strangle trees, dominate tree canopies and kill plants. According to Minnesota's Noxious Weed Law, it is illegal for Oriental bittersweet to be transported or sold in Minnesota. If the vine is found in the state, it should be destroyed or controlled immediately.

Frank Lloyd Wright Phoenix Home Saved from Demolition

The design of Frank Lloyd Wright's Phoenix home in Arcadia was designed to afford views of the orange orchards. A spiral ramp leads up to the main level of the concrete block home. The inside is even more engaging.

Floating Wetlands for Baltimore Harbor?

Baltimore's Inner Harbor is polluted with trash, and sometimes sewage. It is estimated a marsh at the Harborview section of the Baltimore waterfront could extract more than 70,000 pounds of nitrogen and nearly 8,300 pounds of phosphorus from the water each year. The wetlands would also offer shelter for waterfowl, fish and crabs. Some researchers, however, question whether floating wetlands would have much impact on the harbor's open tidal waters.

Concrete Recycling Bolts Into the Future
German scientists are experimenting with sending quick electrical impulses - i.e., lightning bolts - through submerged concrete to break it down into its component stone. Future "fragmentation plants" could process hundreds of tons of concrete waste daily, expanding possible usage of recycled material, which totals millions of tons worldwide.
