Vendor Profile: As Mountain States Wholesale Nursery celebrates 48 years we extend our gratitude to all of our customers and friends who have supported and encouraged us through the years. There are many ways to measure progress and to us the most meaningful sign is the presence of previously unused desert plants in thoughtful landscapes throughout the Southwest. These landscapes range from large-scale projects to simple private gardens each quietly recognizing our deserts as places of great beauty diversity and well-springs of life. The use of desert-adapted plants as landscape materials has evolved from the selection of our durable natives which served to anchor difficult and demanding revegetation sites to an ongoing and continuous search for beauty color and variety. In todays landscapes our plant choices have broadened to include hues and forms which far surpass our earlier hopes of adding texture refinement brilliance-pizzazz if you will-to already proven durability. This evolution and refinement has progressed on many fronts in step with education and much like a partnership together they have established a foundation for greater appreciation and acceptance of desert-adapted plants across the southwestern United States.Without the educational programs sponsored by so many organizations and institutions and without the contributions of enthusiastic writers the knowledge and pleasure of landscaping with this diverse palette would have remained limited to isolated pockets of enthusiasts. Instead the combined efforts of many individuals have resulted in a unique plant palette that provides a distinct sense of place. To assist you in your selection process Mountain States Wholesale Nursery offers over 450 taxa of desert-adapted trees shrubs ornamental grasses accents flowering perennials groundcovers and vines. Yucca rostrata

The blue leaves, tall narrow trunk, and spectacular summer display of creamy white flowers combine to make this one of the finest yuccas for ornamental landscapes. Yucca rostrata forms a trunk to about 10 feet tall. Young plants are usually unbranched, but older plants may develop multiple heads near the top. The narrow blue leaves are up to 2 feet long by 1/2 inch wide, and end in a sharp terminal spine. Yucca rostrata prefers full sun or very light filtered shade, and a rocky, well-drained soil without supplemental organic matter. Our plants were grown from seed or tissue culture and planted in the field. This yucca is one of the most adaptable and versatile species, handling extreme heat and cold with aplomb.

Calliandra x Sierra Starr(TM) PP15387

Sierra Starr(TM) is a hybrid between the Pink Fairy Duster, Calliandra eriophylla and the Baja Fairy Duster, Calliandra californica. It appears that this hybrid combines the best traits of both parents. This clone blooms on and off all year with stunning bright red flowers which are irresistible to hummingbirds. It has a dense, uniform growth habit, growing at a moderate rate to 4-5 feet tall and wide. It is much more densely-branched than Calliandra californica. Because it is a clone, Sierra Starr (TM) may be used successfully in semi-formal rows and masses. It performs best in full sun, and thrives in reflected heat exposures. In mild regions this plant may remain evergreen. The stems are hardy to about 18? F and the plant is root hardy to at least 15? F. An occasional thinning will keep plants full and healthy.

Chilopsis linearis Desert Diva(TM)

Chilopsis linearis 'Lopur' Desert Diva(TM)is an outstanding selection of Desert Willow that was discovered at our Glendale nursery after many years of experimental plantings. Deep, emerald green leaves contrast nicely with velvety white buds. Most often, buds are a good indicator of flower color. Here, there's a twist. The pearlescent buds open to a deep, dark, purple burgundy creating a dramatic, over the top display. Dense, dark green leaf clusters create lovely, soft, dappled shade. The fragrant blossoms are a pollinator magnet and a favorite of our beekeepers here at Mountain States Nursery. So far, our current stock is showing little or no seed production which explains this plant's ability to be so abundantly floriferous.
