The training will give attendees an understanding of the ASTM D-2855 and ASME B31.3 standards for bonding techniques. A presentation will cover the basic principles of and best practices for solvent welding techniques for welding plastic joints.
Following the presentation, trainees will create samples (coupons). In accordance with the ASME B31.3, techniques discussed in the presentation will be applied in practice. Two caps will be cemented to a pipe, which will then be sent to the Weld-On Hydrolab in North Carolina for testing.
After completing and passing the course, attendees will receive a qualification card for working on projects that have the B31.3 standard built into the specifications.
The Solvent Welding Process in accordance with ASTM D2855 standard
(Approximately 1 hour in Exhibit Hall)
• Basic principles of solvent welding
• Proper techniques for solvent welding plastic joints
• Importance of correct sized applicators
• Set and cure times
• Solvent welding tips – hot and cold weather
• Safety precautions
Bonder Qualification in accordance with ASME B31.3 A328 standard
(Approximately 1 hour Outside of Exhibit Hall)
• Materials are provided for each participant
• Assembly of test pipe joint coupons
• Hydrostatic pressure testing coupons at IPS Weld-On Hydro Lab in NC to 580 psi in accordance with ASME B31.3 A328 2.5(c) bonder qualification performance standard

Mike Grabowski is a Chicago native with 17 years of construction experience in masonry, carpentry, electric, plumbing, and landscaping. In addition to being a contractor, Mike has worked in the steel Industry for 13 years, the plastics industry for 12, and the chemical field for 8. He is highly certified in all of these fields, and has most recently been working in the Research and Development Department for Weld-On, focusing on bonding agents for irrigation products both in the US and Europe. His favorite expression is, “Experience is the best education,” and he has lived his life accordingly.
In addition to his active professional career, Mike has been a public speaker for many forums in many venues, including the recent AALSO show for the nation’s aquarium operators. He also teaches others in the industry to become qualified solvent cement bonders of PVC/CPVC pipe and fitting according to the ASME B31.3 and the ATSM D-2855 standards.
