Course Description:


Overview Concept - Building healthy soil for healthy plants

• City or County Perspective

This session will delve into the sustainable landscapes initiative beginning in the San Diego region and will include a panel discussion of the origins, partnerships and goals of the initiative; the main components that define sustainable landscapes; the role of compost, mulch and healthy soils; the use of tools, trainings and education; why your customers may ask you for a sustainable landscape; and how sustainable landscape maintenance requirements differ from those of a traditional landscape




Profile:


Kyrsten Burr-Rosenthal
Kyrsten is a water resources specialist with the San Diego County Water Authority, a regional water wholesale agency responsible for delivering a safe and reliable water supply at an affordable cost to 24 retail water agencies. Working in the Public Outreach and Conservation Department, Kyrsten is involved in the development and implementation of outdoor water-use efficiency programs, including the grant funded Sustainable Landscape Program and the WaterSmart Landscape Efficiency Program. She holds a degree in Urban Economic Geography with a minor in City and Regional Planning from UC Berkeley and a Master’s in Public Administration from San Diego State University. Before joining the Water Authority, Kyrsten worked for the City of San Diego in the Public Utilities Department in Long Range Planning and Water Resources, doing much of the same type of work in water-use efficiency.


JoEllen Jacoby
Supervising Management Analyst / Water Conservation Landscape Architect
Joey works in the Water Conservation Program at the City of San Diego. She represents the City on the Sustainable Landscape Program team. Joey has worked on policy development for the Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance and the Emergency Water Regulations, as well as curriculum for sustainable landscape classes.

Joey is a licensed Landscape Architect, Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor and Watershed Wise Landscape Professional. She has taught irrigation and landscape design classes, worked 19 years in public practice and 15 years in private practice including consulting for Metropolitan Water District.
