Managing and Maintaining Public Landscapes: Parks, Parkways, and Open Space

By: Greg Zoll, RLA

October 5, 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

Course Description:

This course will focus on a summarized but comprehensive approach to managing public landscapes including parks, parkways, and open spaces. It will touch on the many tools available to contractors, agency staff, and managers to effectively manage landscape areas with the funding and staff available. The public landscape has many components including the urban forest, community gardens, parks, sport fields, open spaces, and urban spaces, all of which require a different level of care often by the same staff.

Topics will include:
1. Irrigation: central control, drip conversions, water audits.
2. Plant material: what is right for the region, does it match the desired image of the area, weed control.
3. Sports fields: minimal maintenance and managing water and fertilization.
4. Managing the urban forest within public landscapes.
5. Labor allocation, task assessments, scheduling, and contractor monitoring.
